چکیده

Haptic technology, providing force cues and creating a programmable physical instrument interface, can assist musicians in making gestures. The finite reaction time of the human motor control system implies that the execution of a brief musical gesture does not rely on immediate feedback from the senses, rather it is preprogrammed to some degree. Consequently, we suggest designing relatively simple and deterministic interfaces for providing haptic assistance. In this paper, we consider the specific problem of assisting a musician in selecting pitches from a continuous range. We build on a prior study by O’Modhrain of the accuracy of pitches selected by musicians on a Theremin-like haptic interface. To improve the assistance, we augment the interface with programmed detents so that the musician can feel the locations of equal tempered pitches. Nevertheless, the musician can still perform arbitrary pitch inflections such as glissandi, falls, and scoops. We investigate various forms of haptic detents, including fixed detent levels and forcesensitive detent levels. Preliminary results from a subject test confirm improved accuracy in pitch selection brought about by detents.

EMIC - Compositional experiments and real-time mapping issues in performance

This paper discusses the development of a gestural controller interface for contemporary vocal performance and electronic processing called the eMic (extended Mic-stand interface controller). This instrument is a modified microphone stand, custom fitted with an array of sensors and gesture capturing devices aimed at capturing commonly used gestures and movements of vocal performers who use micr...

A Physically Intuitive Haptic Drumstick

We motivate and discuss the design of a physically intuitive haptic drumstick. A new musical instrument is physically intuitive if the physics of haptic interaction are similar to those supported by a traditional musical instrument. We suggest that physically intuitive new musical instruments may help performers transfer motor skills from familiar, traditional musical instruments. Both actively...

Almost Human: Moving Expressive Gesture from Cello to Spine

Developing approaches to the creation of expert performance practice on new DMIs is a longstanding research challenge. We present an approach which leverages an expert performer’s embodied knowledge of expressive performance gesture on an existing instrument. This knowledge forms the basis for the creation of a performance practice of expressive gestures an a new DMI. The research process took ...

Modal Kombat: Competition and Choreography in Synesthetic Musical Performance

Public competition has been a part of the human experience for at least all of recorded history. The same is true for music. Modal Kombat is a live guitar competition channeled through the video game Mortal Kombat. The performance work builds on the idea of dueling banjos, one of the few examples of public musical competition. Modal Kombat takes this concept one step further by allowing a virtu...

Gest-O: Performer gestures used to expand the sounds of the saxophone

This paper describes the conceptualization and development of an open source tool for controlling the sound of a saxophone via the gestures of its performer. The motivation behind this work is the need for easy access tools to explore, compose and perform electroacoustic music in Colombian music schools and conservatories. This work led to the adaptation of common hardware to be used as a senso...
